A Mosaic is defined as a piece of art made by the assembling of small pieces of coloured glass, stone or various other materials. The use of mosaics can be found worldwide throughout history with their use becoming widespread in both Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece.

Pictured above is an example of mosaics used for a Church floor in Israel. Mosaics were used as a decorative alternative to plain stone floors. Still as hardwearing and practical but allowing for elaborate designs which would have impressed and made the building appear to be grand and of high importance.
