Helping The Homeless

As Tile Choice are a sponsor of Walsall Football Club, we are helping to promote a worthy cause over the Christmas period. As most of you will already know, the homeless are at their most vulnerable when the temperature drops.

For those unaware, Tile Choice have made a contribution to the charity ‘The Big Feed’ in Walsall. Our staff have been putting together care packs for the homeless, of which includes various items such as a pair of gloves, hat, first aid kit and can of soup.

But with so many worthwhile charities out there, why have we elected to put our time and efforts into supporting ‘The Big Feed’?

There is a certain stigma around the homeless with a common assumption that the majority are drug addicts or alcoholics and that their problems are, therefore, self-inflicted. Although there is a certain measure of truth in that thinking, what if often missed is that not everyone turns to drugs or alcohol as a form of recreation, but rather to escape from severe trauma or domestic abuse. To help the homeless is to help some of the most vulnerable and unfortunate people in our community.

A number of different personal and social factors can contribute towards people becoming homeless. These may include one or more of the following: poverty, unemployment, lack of affordable housing, poor physical or mental health, drug and alcohol abuse, gambling, family and relationship breakdown, domestic violence and physical and/or sexual abuse.

The average lifespan for a homeless person is decades below the national average. The truth is that many of the homeless are on “death row” and for these individuals, charities like ‘The Big Feed’ are the only thing standing between them and their early demise.

The Big Feed is a charity run project backed by Walsall Community Church and other local churches whose aim is to help support the homeless, vulnerable and under-privileged people of Walsall and its surrounding areas.

It’s not too late for you to support ‘The Big Feed’ as Walsall Football Club have extended their closing date to Saturday 17th December. To help, all you need to do is fill a shoe box or carrier bag with as many items as you wish.

The suggested list of items include: thinsulate hat, thinsulate gloves, underwear, socks, crisps, energy bars, mints, breakfast bars, chocolate bar (none containing alcohol), instant noodles, bottle of water, fruit juice carton, can of soup, can of beans, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor (disposable), roll on deodorant, toilet roll, plasters, mini first aid kit, tampax, pocket sized mirror, wet wipes, vaseline, flannel, comb, deep heat patches, shampoo and conditioner.

When you have filled a shoe box or carrier bag, simply drop it into Walsall Football Club, The Banks’s Stadium, Bescot Cres, Walsall WS1 4SA.
