Resurgence Of Encaustic Tiles

When summer hits, our moods brighten, our excitement heightens and we’re more inclined to make changes and transform our homes. And the best way to do this is by introducing both colour and pattern – using encaustic tiles. They have enjoyed a rise in popularity in recent years, but their fundamental qualities remain the same; hardwearing tiles combined with impeccable designs.

Encaustic tiles were first made in Europe in the late 19th century. They were used to decorate the floors of palaces in St. Petersburg, Gaudi’s distinctive houses in Barcelona, and grand hallways from Paris to Saigon. Today they are found in countless chic bars, restaurants and designer-homes in London, Paris and New York.

Ca’ Pietra’s collection of hand-made decorative tiles are made using the ‘encaustic’ technique with cement where the pattern is inlaid into the body of the tile, so that the design and colour remain, even as the tile wears. These differ from ceramic tiles, where the surface pattern is the product of the finishing glaze printed on the surface.

By being more creative and original with our décor, it can help to give a room a sense of individuality and we can reflect our personalities by introducing pattern. There is an abundance of different styles, designs and colours to choose from, so you can really go to town with pattern and bring an interior space alive.

Pattern is ideal for creating any style, from the modern to the classic – it is the fast track to a decorative element that doesn’t overwhelm. From modern lined form, zig-zags, art deco style and optically challenging tiles to the beautiful Moroccan-inspired floral creation; pattern has the tendency to create a statement.
